New Year, New Me, and Other Cliché Things Like That
I can't believe 2017 is officially here! I say this every year, but this one seemed to have flown by the fastest. In a blink of an eye we're starting over with a fresh, clean slate. And boy does it feel good. 2016 was a good one. I got a big promotion at work, I was a maid of honor for my cousin/best friend, went to a couple weddings, spent so many wonderful weekends traveling, made new friends in DC and across the blogosphere, and ended with a redesigned site and new perspective that I'm totally in love with.
Perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the year is feeling more aware of who I am and what I want to do. And it's an awesome feeling. While 2016 felt like a year of growth, learning, and lots and lots of self-discovery. I'm hoping 2017 will be one of acceptance and action... pushing myself and making the right moves toward the future I want! One of creativity, freedom, beauty, and good vibes. So, instead of focusing on this past year... I'm here to chat about THIS one and what I'm attempting to do to make it a better one. There was nothing particularly special about the past 12 months and I'm hoping to change that this time around. In true New Years fashion, here are my resolutions for an absolutely fabulous 2017! Attainable, important, and healthy goals for a bigger, better year.
do what i love and do less of the other stuff
Whether it be professionally or in my personal life, I'm so ready to do more of what I love and less of the other stuff. I want to be a bigger advocate for myself and speak up about doing the things I love most! Now that I know the type of career I want to work toward, I'm hoping to take the steps to get there in the new year, and continue to support myself and work toward something I'm totally passionate about.
I can't say enough how disappointed I am in myself for never learning to speak Spanish properly. When I was younger, it was much easier to speak and understand, but as my parents divorced and I was spending less time with my dad's side of the family, it just became harder to grasp the language. This is one of my biggest goals of the year! To be able to have full conversations with my abuela who only speaks Spanish and be able to follow, understand, and write it well. If you have any tips, please send them my way! Anyone have experience with Rosetta Stone?
take a class
I'm dying to take a class or lessons in anything. Cooking, piano, sewing, surfing, tennis...for a few reasons. One being that I think it's a great way to be social with a new crowd. Two..it gets you doing something routine on a weekly basis. Something to always look forward to. And three, I'd love to add a new talent to my repertoire. Hobbies are great and blogging is my main squeeze, but I hope to do something away from the screen entirely.
Sadly, I didn't leave the country in 2016. I'm huge on traveling. I find it so important and really feel strongly that it's always a good idea to take advantage of travel any time you possibly can! Say yes to new adventures they say. In 2017, I want to plan a big trip out of the country, somewhere brand new and exciting. Of course, traveling to a new state is on my bucket list as well. Let the planning begin.
be better at saving money
I'm totally terrible about money. I have no shame admitting it and am so sadly self-aware of this fact. This year, I really really really really want to be better about spending it, or rather, not spending it. I admittedly shop more than I need to and thanks to my job, I can afford to. BUT, I'm hoping to build up that savings account even more and minimize my spendings, and in turn, take a minimalist approach toward living and shopping. Most importantly, I want to figure out a real, reasonable budget and actually stick to it.
do morning person things in the morning
I am not a morning person. Let me make that very clear. Not that I hate mornings, I just physically and mentally cannot do morning. I'll never be a cool morning person. I don't drink coffee, so that's not even an option. I'm hoping to figure out a healthy morning routine this year. One that allows me to comfortably wake up and enjoy my morning rather than crawling out of bed with my eyes shut and getting ready quickly to run out the door. How do night owls become morning people? TELL ME YOUR SECRETS.
step away from my comfort zone
The big one. I absolutely, no doubt, 100% need to step outside my comfort zone in 2017. I've lived in the area my entire life. Most of my family and closest friends are still within an hour drive. I can easily get home to my parents any day of the week. The college I attended is 45 minutes away. I'm telling you...I need change. I'm so anxious for a fresh city and new adventures. So, out of my comfort zone I must be! I'm not entirely sure what that means yet, but I'm hoping to figure it out. Change is good and I need to be better at it.
There you have it! I'm pretty stoked to start over and get sh*t done this year. It's as good a time as any to set new goals. Let's just hope I actually follow through on them. I'd love to hear about your resolutions in the comments below! Happy New Year!!
