June Diary

June Diary on Natalie Catalina

June marks the official start to summer, and I’m living for it.

This month has already been so good. The weather has been amazing, even with the thunderstorms we’re getting… I can’t complain, I love them too! I’ve been doing lots of fun things with friends outside in the open air, and it’s just been so nice to embrace the sunshine. It’s the season of dinner al fresco, walks in the park, hanging by the water, rooftop lounging, and longer days. And I love being home in the late evenings with the golden sunshine lighting up my apartment in the best way. All so far so good, and tomorrow morning we’re off on vacation!!! June is good.

I’m flying to Hawaii first thing tomorrow!!! I’m so excited to go back. We went last year and had a blast, but it was a bit exhausting with all the island hopping and excursions. This time around, we’re only heading back to Maui and straight up lounging all week. We do have a few plans!! Like my brother and his fiancé getting married in a tiny, private ceremony! And a Luau and catamaran sunset cruise (when in Rome). But mostly, we’re all looking forward to total beach time and lounging by the pool.

Totally loving the latest Netflix additions this month. Everyone needs to go watch Always Be My Maybe. Such a fun and cute movie, with a couple great comedian actors (shout out to Ali Wong), and also a very random appearance by Keanu lol. Also loved Someone Great, kind of a cheesy break-up/life in late-twenties type movie. Reminded me of How to Be Single. For a couple movies on the opposite end, I watched I Am Mother, a dark sci-fi story - gotta love those! And on Hulu…. Handmaids is back in action with season 3. #praisebe

I’ve really been loving Kate La Vie lately. I’ve followed Kate for so long, but her blog content lately has been SO GOOD. I’m also excited that she and her husband bought a new flat that they’re renovating, so I’m really excited for that content. Her interior posts are so inspirational. Also just finished the book The Woman Inside and it’s pretty good! As usual, a recommendation from Grace. It’s suspenseful, a murder “mystery,” and a story about a broken marriage. I flew through it! Not the best murder book I’ve read, but still kept me captivated. Next up is Matchmaking for Beginners.

Lately, I’ve been getting back into decorating my apartment and filling in some of the space that’s gone unoccupied for a year. I just received my two new wall scones from UO and am getting this piece from CB2 to put on the empty wall in my living room. I switched out my wood Ikea sideboard from my dining room and stuck it in my bedroom for extra storage and to fill in some space. To replace it, I’m grabbing this piece from Ikea! Lastly, in furniture, I need to find the perfect chair (or two) to stick in my living room, and get my current vintage one in there reupholstered for my bedroom. After that it’s all about the wall art!

My newsletter is coming back people! In case it wasn’t obvious enough on my homepage or with the popups :). I’ve been playing around with new designs and am really excited to get back into this outlet. With my blog being my number one priority in terms of my internet life/social media, I really want to bring people here most of all! It’ll be a fun email to receive, I promise! With a few things that you won’t see on the blog. Sign up here!

May Diary

What a long month! But it’s been a good, relaxing one.

After getting back from Italy, I was so ready to be back in a routine. It’s finally been feeling like summer in DC, and though there’s been an insane amount of rain, the city has started to come alive with outdoor happy hours, beer gardens, tourists, game crowds, and everything in bloom. I love this time of year! I’m getting into a good groove, getting up early, being productive, working out in the evenings, and being social. A few things going on with me this month…

I’ve been really good about working out at least four times a week, sometimes even five or six! It’s been good for my mental health too and just feeling better overall. I’ve been following the girls of Tone it Up for so many years and have finally downloaded the app. I’ve been using it every week and love the videos and their motivation. Highly recommend! I’ve also been using Aaptiv for guidance in the gym, using machines. It’s so much easier to know what to do when someone is guiding you, and when you don’t like workout classes like me, apps are the way to go!

Obviously bummed GOT is over! I can’t believe how many years I’ve been watching it. I won’t get into that whole thing, but I do have a few other shows I’ve been loving. Dead to Me on Netflix is so good. Love the cast, love the comedy, love the drama, and suspense. I finished it in three nights, enough said. I also watched The Society on Netflix, and it’s one of those guilty pleasures… a story about a town where all the adults disappear and the teens have the fend for themselves and rebuild a society of their own. Also, saw that The Rain season 2 is up now! I enjoyed season one and love me a doomsday thriller, so I’ll definitely be starting that one this week.

I’ve finally been getting into Grace Atwood’s podcast, Bad on Paper, and I really love it guys. I’m usually strictly all about crime when it comes to podcasts, but added this to the mix a couple months ago and am all caught up. It’s basically like you’re at a sleepover or out for drinks chatting with your girlfriends about anything and everything. I’ve also loved the guests that have come on and really love the conversations they have. Add it to the mix. I’m excited to be going to their live show here in DC in a couple weeks too!

That sounds dramatic. But lately I’ve really been feeling 29. Hard. I don’t know if it’s because I’m in the last year of my twenties, but just have so many emotions and thoughts about getting older. Questioning myself, wondering how things could be different, thinking about where I want to be. Ugh, life. I’ve been following communities like The Insecure Girls Club, by a favorite blogger Olivia, where women are embracing being vulnerable - what’s not to love about that? It’s made me feel better and less alone, and love that they’re making it normal and easy to talk about these things.

Cooking has become such a moment of zen and meditation for me. I love finding recipes that sound amazing and bringing them to life on my own. I subscribed to Bon Appétit and have really enjoyed making things I find there. Also, as a designer, I just really love everything they push out and the creativity of their magazines and graphics. Each month, I’m excited to get the latest issue in the mail and read through it. Thinking I may add a new Directory item for food!! Getting very into food blogs and instagrams lately.

Until next month!

My Body, My Choice

A different type of post today. I couldn’t be silent over here any longer. Here’s what I have to say.

I'm sad and grossed out by what's currently happening in our country regarding the abortion ban and control over women's bodies. I've spoken up on Instagram, on Twitter, and Facebook, and now, I must use this sacred space where I share pretty goods and nice things to talk about what’s happening right now. I don't often chat about matters like this, and yes, it is an uncomfortable topic for so many people, but it's time that those who are pro choice speak up - those who believe that every single human should have control over their own bodies - especially as women, but also as the men who support the idea that their wives, sisters, daughters, granddaughters, friends, cousins, girlfriends, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, coworkers, etc. should have power over their own bodies. This is not just an issue of abortion, but an issue of basic human rights. What's going on is insane to me.

Many representatives and people say they are pro life, yet do nothing to support and improve the lives of so many people already existing and suffering out in the world - including victims of rape who became pregnant and those children, women with no paid maternity leave or daycare, low-income families who can't afford healthcare, immigrants, LGBQT, and so many more. Many people are also ill-informed, and do not fully understand abortion and why so many women choose it or are forced to due to medical reasons... there are many reasons why. 1 in 4 women have had an abortion. All of us probably know someone who has... I know 4. Today, it's a few states, tomorrow, it's nationwide. Today, it's abortion, tomorrow it's your rights stripped away - we must look at the larger picture. Everything happening is not normal.

It's important to note that banning abortion will not stop them from happening! Women will simply suffer more due to this ban. We must keep them safe and legal. If a woman is pregnant as a result of being raped, she and the doctor helping her would face insane and horrible repercussions that are worse than her rapist. WTF is that?

If you follow me on Instagram, please look at my highlight/stories to learn more and see all the other ways you can help or learn more. I am lucky enough to have a larger following than many, and if I can encourage or inspire even three people to donate...or even just become more aware and get them thinking... then posting all this and putting my beliefs out there is worth it.

You do not have to agree with me and if you don't, that's ok, but if you do... SPEAK UP AND HELP. Silence gets you and those you care about nowhere. Silence does not create change. You can also simply read up, listen up, have conversations, read the news, click on links, donate, become educated, VOTE. Share your values, share your stories. Talk about it.
